Inca Bridge Hike
Many tourists seem to ignore the Inca Bridge at Machu Picchu during their visit, we assume that this is because this hike is not included on their trip to Machu Picchu so they only visit the ruins for 2 hours and they leave then, or maybe because they don’t want to hiketo the bridge, or maybe they just don’t know the Inca bridge exists.
What is the Inca Bridge?
The Inca Bridge is an impressive example of Inca architecture, it is also referred to as a “secret entrance” to Machu Picchu. The entire trail is built on the cliffs at the western approach to Machu Picchu.

How to Get to Inca Bridge?
Goes up from the main entrance of Machu Picchu, passing through the Caregiver’s Hut. Nearby, you should be able to see a wooden sign pointing the way to the Inca Bridge. If not, ask one of the many guards at the site to point out the way. The trail is a stone path, part of which is cut into a cliff fase. After a 30 minute walk from the citadel, at the end of a narrow path near the mountain, is Inca Bridge, the place where the Incas took refuge in the Andes, when they abandoned Machu Picchu. The view over the Urubamba River and the Andes seen through the cloud forest is absolutely amazing, especially since not many tourist come to visit this hidden trail.
Is it safe to hike to the Inca Bridge?
The trek is short and does not require much physical effort to complete. However, the path at times is narrow with steep cliffs but not dangerous. Although you should be careful, especially if you are hiking with children.
Where the Inca Bridge Leads to?
Back in Inca times, it is believed that the Inca bridge led to the town of Vilcabamba; considered also as the last refuge of the Inca. The Inca bridge was only used by the army who guarded the entrance to Machu Picchu. Nowadays it is not possible to cross the bridge because of the danger it is, the hike to the Inca bridge from Machu Picchu only reaches the beginning of the real trail to Vilcabamba.
