Machupicchu (from the Quechua “Old Mountain”), according to documents from the mid-sixteenth century, Machupicchu would have been one of the rest residences of Pachacútec (first Inca emperor, 1438-1470). However, some of its best constructions and the evident ceremonial character of the main access road to the llaqta would demonstrate that it was used as a religious sanctuary.3 Both uses, palace and sanctuary, would not have been incompatible. Some experts seem to have ruled out, on the other hand, a supposed military character, so that the popular descriptions of “fortress” or “citadel” could have been surpassed.

Machupicchu is considered both a masterpiece of architecture and engineering. Its peculiar architectural and landscape features, and the veil of mystery that has woven around much of the literature published on the site, have made it one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet.

Machupicchu has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1983, as part of an entire cultural and ecological ensemble known as the Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu.

On July 7, 2007, Machupicchu was declared one of the new wonders of the world in a ceremony held in Lisbon, Portugal, after the participation of 100 million voters from around the world.

Machu Picchu Sacred Valley 2 Day Tour by Train Detailed Itinerary

sacred valley machu picchu 2 days
machu picchu

For the Sacred Valley tour on the Machu Picchu 2 day tour we offer you 2 ways to visit the Sacred Valley which way is totally different and offers an unique experience, you can choose which one you want, you just need to inform us which one you chose before you make the reservation.

OPTION #01: CHINCHERO – MORAY RUINS – MARAS SALT MINES – OLLANTAYTAMBO RUINS

At 08:00 AM, we will be picking you up from your hotel in Cusco. In our private transport, we will be driving you for an hour to Chinchero.

Chinchero:

To Incas, Chinchero was the mythical birthplace of Rainbow.

The village is popular for the Andean textile industry. People living here continue to dress in their colourful traditional outfits and speak Quechua. This would be a perfect introduction to the Inca civilization.

We will be visiting the farming terraces here built along with the former summer palace of the Inca Emperor, Pachacutec. It is believed that among all sites in the Sacred Valley, Chinchero has the most fertile soil.

Moray:

We will then continue the tour to Moray. It is home to the most photographed circular terraces that looks like Roman Amphitheatre. It served as an agricultural labaratory for the Incas.

These terraces are built in a form of stairs dug into the ground. Each level of the terrace has different temperatures. In fact, there is a difference in temperature of 15 degrees Celsius (27 degrees Fahrenheit) from the top to the bottom.

This allowed the Incas to experiment and determine the best temperature needed to grow a crop. Thanks to their advancement, Peru now produces over 4000 varieties of potatoes.

Maras:

We will then visit Maras. Home to over 5000 salt puddles clinging to the slopes of the canyon, Maras produces the best salt in Peru. People here practise Solar evaporation mentos to extract salt. It has been passed down generation after generation.

They let in freshwaters in these salt pools and wait for it to evaporate. Then they manually scrape out salt. The salt here is pinkish in colour and tastes a bit different. It is also quite nutritious.

Urubamba:

We will then visit Urubamba village. Here we will be stopping at a local restaurant where we will be serving you lunch. Urubamba is at a very low altitude in the whole Sacred Valley.

Ollantaytambo:

After relishing a traditional Andean lunch, we will be driving you to Ollantaytambo.

Dominated by two massive Inca ruins, this serene ancient village of Ollantaytambo is the best example of the Inca’s town planning. Designed with narrow cobblestoned streets, the town has been continuously inhabited since the 13th century.

Here we will be visiting the Inca site that nestles overlooking this picturesque village. Ollantaytambo was one of the most sacred Inca sites. It turned into a deadly battleground where the infamous battle of Ollantaytambo was fought in 1531.

After the tour, we will be taking a 1 hour and 45 minutes train to Aguas Calientes. We will be accommodating you in an ensuite hotel in Aguas Calientes for the night.

OPTION #02: PISAC – ALPACA FARM – PISAC RUINS – PISAC MARKET – OLLANTAYTAMBO RUINS

On this route, we begin with a visit to the alpaca farm on our way to the ruins of Pisac. If you are traveling with children we highly recommend this route. After visiting the archaeological site we will go down back to the town to visit the Pisac market. This has become one of the most famous in the Cusco region.

We will then drive to the town of Urubamba for lunch.  Here you will taste the most delicious Peruvian food, as well as ceviche, quinoa soup, lomo saltado, chicharrones etc,

After a well deserved lunch we will travel for 20 minutes in our private transportation to the town of Ollantaytambo.

Here we will visit the imposing ruins of Ollantaytambo, after we have visited Ollantaytambo we will go to the train station to take the 7pm train to the town of Aguas Calientes where we will spend the night.

Places you’ll visit:

  • Alpaca farm
  • Pisac ruins
  • Pisac local market
  • Ollantaytambo ruins

DAY 2- MACHU PICCHU TOUR

At 0600 AM, we will be taking the bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. It will be a 25-minute drive up to the lost city of the Incas. As you will be entering the citadel, you will witness the golden rays of the morning sun shimmering on the mortar walls of Machu Picchu.

Our guide will be giving you a detailed two hours tour of the complex. On this tour, you will be visiting the main square, remains of the quarters and Inca temples, ceremonial sites and more.

After the tour, you will have some free time. If you have booked to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain, our guide will be directing you to the respective trailhead.

Alternatively, you can hike to the iconic Sungate. It serves as an entrance to the citadel to those hiking the Inca trail to Machu Picchu.

Later in the evening, you will be taking a bus back to Aguas Calientes. You will have some free time to saunter through the narrow streets of this village.

In the evening, we will be boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo. Our representative will be meeting you on arrival and will be transferring you back to your hotel in Cusco.

WHAT WE WILL SEE ON THE TOUR

The Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu tour was and still is one of the most preferred tours by most tourists and the best selling tour, that’s why we recommend our clients to book their Machu Picchu 2 days tour as soon as possible, what we offer you in our Machu Picchu 2 days tour is a complete tour with the visit to the Sacred Valley from Cusco and train to Machu Picchu at the end of the tour. The Machu Picchu 2 day tour from Cusco is idea for those who are short of time but still want to make the most of the 2 days, if you don’t like much hiking or you are too short of time then this Machu Picchu 2 day tour with the Sacred Valley is perfect for you.

Machu Picchu citadel is built between the Machu Picchu mountain and the Huayna Picchu mountains.

These in turn, are surrounded by the Urubamba river canyon and by other mountain chains belonging to the Andes mountain range. Just on the border with the Amazon jungle.

Next to it there is a cloud forest that makes it look like it can touch the clouds inside the city, so it is known as the city in the clouds. But it is not everything, this amazing place is flooded with thousands of species of plants and animals.

Many of which cannot be seen anywhere else on the planet (endemic species) and others that are in danger of extinction, such as the “cock of the rocks” or the “spectacled bear”. The latter walks freely in the vicinity of the Inca city and does not represent any danger.

Exploring the mystery surrounding the jewel of the Incas

Stones of its structures joined and perfectly fitted together like a puzzle without any kind of glue, are not the only or the greatest mystery of Machu Picchu. Seeing walls built with stones that seem to have been molded as if they had been made of clay is a mystery, but there are others.

Machu Picchu like other amazing structures of ancient world cultures, such as the pyramids of Egypt or the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, has its own geodesic line and is perfectly aligned with other ancient Inca cities. Another of the mysteries of Machu Picchu is its location, why did they choose this inaccessible place to build one of its most important cities? Did it have to do with the energy vortex? Machu Picchu did not have a written history, so its true purpose was never known. What exactly was Machu Picchu, a ceremonial site, a royal residence; many possibilities are shuffled but none are fully proven.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Machu Picchu?

The world’s favorite destination Machu Picchu: the most important construction made by the Incas. It is in the department of Cusco, 75 km northwest of the capital (City of Cusco), at an altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level.  It was lost in the misty valleys of the jungle part of the Andean mountain range, until its official discovery in 1911. It is a spectacular citadel built in stone, located at the top of a mountain and very close to the clouds.

What is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

It will depend on your preferred climate. The dry season runs from April to October and the rainy season runs from November to March.

Dry season.  In the city of Cusco (obligatory stop for almost all visitors), the climate is rather cool throughout the period and quite cold between June and late August. However, Machu Picchu belongs to a subtropical climate, days are warm to hot, sometimes a little cold at night.

Rainy season. On the other hand, in the city of Cusco it rains a lot in these months, but in short periods and 2 or 3 times per week, the same can be observed in Machu Picchu.

What kind of clothes and items should I bring for the trip?

Machu Picchu is located on the border of the Amazon jungle. In other words, it has a subtropical climate (warm and humid), so the type of clothing we recommend you wear is:

If you travel during the rainy season (November – April). The best option is to wear a raincoat as well as waterproof and windproof clothing. But dress in layers, in a way that you can adapt your clothes to a changing climate, either cool or warm.

Even if it’s hot in the morning, always wear a warm garment. It may be annoying to have to carry it during the visit, but it’s best to be prepared for the late afternoon wind.

Long-sleeved polo shirts (preferably). To avoid insect bites and/or annoying sunburn.

Cap and sunglasses. A light and comfortable cap to keep you cool. The lenses will allow you to appreciate all the beauty of Machu Picchu without having to strain your eyes.

Sunscreen and insect repellent.

Don’t forget to bring plenty of water! Staying hydrated with purified or bottled water is the best thing you can do.

What can’t I take to Machu Picchu?

Prohibited objects. It is very important to take this aspect into account as well, to avoid that any of your belongings are prevented from entering the sanctuary and that you have to rent a deposit or locker, whose cost is somewhat high. Our article on what not to take to Machu Picchu will give you all the information in detail.

How to get from the town of Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu?

Aguas Calientes (or Machu Picchu town), is next to the citadel. This is also one of the frequently asked questions on the Machu Picchu 2019 tour. There are two ways to get to the Inca Sanctuary from there:

  1. a) If you like to walk and enjoy nature. There is a route that ends with properly signposted stairs. The average walk will take 1 hour and a half.
  2. b) The best option is to go by bus. The trip will take about 30 minutes. This bus will drop you off at the entrance to the citadel of Machu Picchu. They depart from 5:30 a.m.

How much luggage can I take on the train and what can I do with my suitcases?

The train services, either Peru Rail or Inca Rail, only allow you to carry one piece of hand luggage, weighing a maximum of 5 kilos. Both companies offer free storage for this luggage. The other option is to leave it at the hotel in Aguas Calientes. For the Machu Picchu tour, a small backpack is enough.

When should I reserve the ticket?

It will depend on your plans. If you want to know only the citadel of Machu Picchu, 2 months in advance is recommended. But if you also want to include the walk of the mountain Huayna Picchu, the reservation should be made about 5 or 6 months in advance, since this attraction is exhausted very quickly.

Can I visit Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu on the same day?

One of the frequently asked questions tour Machu Picchu 2019. Yes it is possible. And obviously it can also be done on different days. The entrance to the mountain Huayna Picchu has 3 schedules: 7 to 8 am (two groups) and 10 to 11 am (last group).  Remember that this attraction is within the same citadel. Learn more about the wonderful Huayna Picchu mountain.

From what time can you enter the citadel?

From 06:00 am to 17:00 hours, every day. Your tour will be made within that time, according to the planning that you and we agree. If you want a special schedule or a more individualized service (in general, our tour of the citadel lasts 2 hours and a half, plus an extra time for you to revisit the places that especially interested you), the ideal option is to hire one of our private tours, as these can be completely personalized, differently from conventional tours.

Where are the thermal waters of Machu Picchu?

They are in Aguas Calientes (a town next to the complex). Specifically at the end of Pachacuteq Avenue, about 20 minutes from its Plaza de Armas. The springs sprout from between the rocks with different warmth. The temperature of the waters is between 35ºC and 43ºC.

Is the visit to the historical sanctuary recommended for people of any age?

There is no age limit. Babies, children, young people, adults, senior citizens can visit it. In addition, we can also make tours for people with special needs (for example, tourists in wheelchairs, blind, deaf, etc). The only condition in this case is that the tour is booked in advance, as the preparations are a little more complex.
