Hiking the Inca Trail is possible for all ages as long as you are fit. Have you booked your Inca Trail tour already? Do you feel you haven’t prepared enough? How hard is the Inca Trail?
What might ruin your trip on the Inca Trail is not you, or the weather conditions. However, altitude sickness could become your worst enemy if you have not yet correctly acclimated. (We recommend start training 2 months in advance at home). This is why we have designed this training itinerary for the Inca Trail plus our acclimatization program where you will not only feel better but we will also make sure that you will successfully achieve your adventure trip, in other words we will train you about 2 days before you start the 4 day Inca Trail, or the short Inca Trail hike.
Upon arrival in Cusco we will take you straight to the Sacred Valley where you will stay for 2 nights, before beginning your trek. during these 2 days you will do certain outdoor activities, as well as due to the low altitude of the place where you will stay, you will not be so concerned about the effects of altitude sickness. If some symptoms of altitude sickness are experienced, the effect will be minimal.
When your body is physically exhausted, you have only one thing left. This is your mental strength. mind is a powerful tool and needs to be trained. Preparing For The Inca Trail
Once you have booked your tour for the Inca Trail you should prepare yourself physically and mentally. Preparing for the Inca Trail isn’t just a case of having the best trekking equipment, reading all the traveler blogs and hoping for the best, but rather doing what is necessary to ensure that you have a successful and unforgettable adventure in the Peruvian mountains.

What is the highest point on the Inca Trail?
The highest point is 4,215m (13,828 ft), trail is nearly 28 miles long, but it is incredibly rewarding. This elevation could cause problems even for fit travelers, therefor you have to get used to the high altitude by staying at a lower elevation and enjoying short hikes in the Sacred Valley area for a couple of days before starting on the Inca Trail. This is the best way to prevent altitude sickness.
The difficulty of the Inca Trail begins with the distance. It is 45 km (26 miles) in total, covered during 4 days and 3 nights. The classic Inca Trail is generally divided into the following 4 days:
Day 1: 16 km (10 miles). highest point 3000 m (9842 ft)
Day 2: 12 km (7.5 miles). highest point 4250 m (13779 ft)
Day 3: 9 km (5.6 miles). highest point 3800 m (12800 ft)
Day 4: 4 km (2.5 miles) highest point 3680 m (12073 ft)

How is the 2-day Inca Trail?
The shorter Inca Trail is for those trekkers with limited time on their hands or who just want to take things a little easier. This trail starts at km104 and climbs to the ruins of Wiñay Wayna before continuing to Machu Picchu. As there is not much time at Machu Picchu on the first day, Machu Picchu is visited the next day by bus from the town of AC. Permits could be reserved at least 2 months in advance.
We pick you up from your hotel in Cusco or from the airport in Cusco, we go to the Sacred Valley by the route of Chinchero. We visit the Salineras of Maras and the archaeological site of Moray. After this, we have lunch in the town of Maras in a restaurant called Mamamecha which is quite preferred by tourists for its panoramic windows and views of the Andes. After a delicious lunch we will drive to the town of Urubamba where you will spend your first night.
Day -2 Ollantaytambo Ruins & Short Hiking to Pinkuylluna Mountain
Very early at 8 am approximately we will pick you up from your hotel and we will head to the town of Ollantaytambo where we will visit the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo, the tour in this site will be 2 hours and then we will hike to the mountain of Pinkuylluna exactly where the warehouses are located, this ascent will take about 40 minutes to 1 hour, we will hike through an original Inca trail with beautiful views, exploring the houses and part of the military sector that used to protect the entrance to Ollantaytambo.
By midday after this fantastic trek we will descend to go for lunch. In the afternoon we will take you back to your hotel in Urubamba.
Day -3 Urubamba to Pisac Ruins and Hiking to Pisac Mountain
Today we will wake up at 7am and head for the town of Pisac, here we will not only visit the ruins of Pisac but also have a short trek through the religious sector better known as Intiwatana, here we will carry walking sticks and our guide will show you how to use the walking sticks and many more tips. You will learn how to organize your backpack, as well as what to bring and what not to bring to the Inca Trail.

1 Day Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu – Machu Picchu One Day Hike Itinerary
At 0400 AM, we will be picking you up from your hotel in Cusco. Then in our private transport, we will be driving you through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Ollantaytambo train station. Here you will be boarding the train to Km.104. This is the trail head of short Inca Trail.
It gets its name after its distance from Cusco while travelling to Machu Picchu.
After a short introduction, we will begin the hiking gradually up the hill. We will be having a detailed tour of the famous Inca site of Wiñay Wayana. In Quechua the name means forever young. This is an unmissable site along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
After the tour, we will be having our box lunch at the lunch camp. We will then hike to the Sungate from where you will get the first views of Machu Picchu citadel. Here we will have a short stop to contemplate the piqturesuqe vista.
Machu Picchu:
We will then hike down the hill and arrive at Machu Picchu citadel. Our local expert will be giving you an immersive tour of the citadel. On this two hours tour, you will be visiting some of the prominent sites like the sacred plaza, the sun temple, the temple of the condor.
After the tour, you will have some free time to enjoy the Inca citadel on your own.
We will then take the Machu Picchu Aguas Calientes bus down to the town. You will have some free time to walk around the narrow streets of this town.

Important: The one-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu does not include porter service to carry your belongings during the trek.
Therefore, it is recommended to travel light.
To enjoy this wonderful Inca trail hike. A light backpack is the essential to feel good. The box lunch will also be carried by you.
The weather on the 1 day Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu is relatively warm, the rainy season in Cusco starts from December to February, so the best time to do the one day Inca Trail tour is from March to November and December but you have to know that the weather in Cusco is unpredictable so you have to be prepared to ensure that nothing ruins your trip, we recommend wearing rain ponchos as well as hiking boots, mosquito repellents, sun blocker, a good backpack.
To do this trek you don’t necessarily need to be in shape but if you need some training before, for this we recommend our full day tour in Pisac with the acclimatization program that will help you a lot, follow the link here for more information, to book the Inca Trail 1 day or the 2 days necessarily need to do at least 3 months in advance, you do not need to be completely acclimatized since the place where you will do the Inca Trail is much lower than Cusco so do not panic, in the hike you will carry a lunch bag make sure to make space in your backpack.
Note:
One thing you should know about the 1 day Inca Trail is that it will start as early as possible so as not to rush and make the hike more pleasant as you will take the train back that same day, for this our guide will give you a briefing or orientation the day before your trip either in your hotel or by phone if you are in urubamba or ollantaytambo, once you make the reservation we will arrange the day of your briefing.
You also have to inform us if you are vegetarian so we will have your lunch bag ready for the day of your trek.
We do not recommend walking sticks because you will only be walking for 1 day or for 4 hours but if you have knee problems or have any knee surgery then you will need to purchase them.
It is very important for trekkers for the 1 day Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu to understand that you are doing the same trip as the 2 Day Inca Trail, just a little quicker. You should be in excellent physical condition to be able to do this trek and arrive at Machu Picchu Citadel in time. otherwise you may miss the train back to Cusco. If you’re over 50 and think the trek may be too difficult, you may book the 2 day Inca Trail.
You should understand that you are doing the same trail as the 2 Day Inca Trail, just more quickly and without overnight in Aguas Calientes.
Trekkers need to be in moderate to excellent physical condition to do the inca trail 1 day
If you think the one day hike machu picchu may be too strenuous and quick, you can opt for the 2-day, 1-night Inca Trail which offers the same hike at a slower pace.

It is necessary to acclimatize in Cusco, one or two days before starting the tour. For a good acclimatization it is necessary to rest as much as possible, to eat little, to drink abundant liquid; specially the mate of coca that possesses known healing and digestive properties. An adequate acclimatization avoids that it affects the “soroche” or bad of height, that could cause numerous annoyances to the health.
Trekking to Machu Picchu through the Inca Trail in 1 day
Between Andean mountains and tropical forest there is a great Inca Trail crossing the mountains and the Sacred Valley. The first archaeological site we will visit is Chachabamba (2,200 m / 7,218 ft) located next to the Urubamba River and at the top is Wiñaywayna (2650 m / 8,694 ft) then we will go to Intipunku (2,720 m / 8,924 ft) where we will have a panoramic view of Machu Picchu (2,490 m / 8,169 ft), you can also find a wide variety of flora and fauna as well as a diversity of birds.
The walk takes approximately 6 to 7 hours to reach the Puerta del Sol known as Inti Punku, where you can get the first panoramic views of Machu Picchu. Prior to the walk the guide will be presented at your hotel and will give precise information about the walk and recommendations of the things you should bring, you will also be given the tickets (entrance to the Inca Trail, train ticket, etc..) ideal time at which you can make your queries.
One of the main attractions along the route is the ancient network of settlements built on granite rock by the Incas such as Wiñay Wayna and Phuyupatamarca immersed in an overwhelming natural scenery. Hundreds of varieties of orchids, multicolored birds, and dream landscapes provide the ideal setting for a route that the walker should walk at least once.
What happens if you renew your passport or document?
If you renew or change the number or names of your passport or documents after booking the tour/walk, you must send us a photograph of the new passport or document; we will make the change with the authorities before you arrive in Cusco; the extra cost to make the change is $20 which will cover expenses for the change of Inca Trail Entry, MachuPicchu Entry and train tickets. If you do not wish to pay the $20 for the corresponding changes you must bring your new and old passport or document to show it to the authorities (Inca Trail, entrance to MachuPicchu, train tickets). If you don’t have the 2 passports you will have to buy a new entrance to the Inca Trail, MachuPicchu and by train on your own, the costs could be around $100.
What type of Hostel is reserved for this tour?
In Aguas Calientes; we will reserve in the hostels Golden Sunrise or similar offers comfortable beds, hot water for the bath, Wi-Fi and breakfast.
NOTE: We guarantee the above mentioned hotel reservation only if you make your reservation in advance. Otherwise, we may have to offer alternative accommodation.
Can I exchange the hotel in Aguas Calientes?
Yes, each traveler has their own expectations of accommodations. That is why we offer you the option of reserving your own independent hotel.

Can I change my return train ticket from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo for an earlier one?
Yes, you can make this change personally at the Aguas Calientes train station. However, they will ask you to pay an additional fee for changing the ticket and this change will be subject to the availability of spaces and timetables on the train. In this case you will be responsible for assuming the cost of your return transport from Ollantaytambo to Cusco.
How long will it take to return to Cusco?
You will travel for about two and a half hours before returning to Cusco. And this is divided into a one-and-a-half hour train ride to the Ollantaytambo train station. From there our driver will pick you up outside the train station. Our driver will be waiting for you with a sign with your name on it, so there will be no confusion. If you don’t see our driver initially you just have to wait for him outside the station. Once our driver has picked you up you will travel for another hour and a half before returning to Cusco.
Refund:
The deposit you will make to secure your booking for your tour is unfortunately not refundable, once tickets have been purchased due to the booking policies of the companies that sell them are not refundable or transferable.
Health and Safety:
All of our participants must inform us if they have or have had any illness that may affect their personal or group progress during the walk. They must also bring their own medications. We recommend that you visit your doctor before making your reservation if you have any health problems.
Where to store your belongings:
You can leave or store the things that you will not take to the Inca Trail in the hotel or hostel where you are staying. Most of these establishments have stores where they will keep their things. If you do not trust the place where you are staying, we will gladly store your belongings in our office.
When is the best time to travel the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?
From May to September (dry season) is the ideal time to travel the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. These months are generally good for the crossing due to the low frequency of rains.
In the months of November to March the summer (rainy season) is present. This season is usually very rainy, which makes walking and access difficult. You will not even be able to walk the Inca Trail in February due to rainfall and maintenance work.
Overall Difficulty – Easy to Moderate difficult (depends on your level of fitness).
If you’re concerned about making it because you are relatively unfit, we recommend doing at least two long-distance (5km) mountain hikes in your home country before you undertake your Machu Picchu trek.
If you find you are out of breath you are pushing yourself too hard, reduce distance and intensity until you get to a comfortable pace and slowly build up your endurance. Make sure you go slowly on your trek, particularly on the ascents up. Breathe deep into your lungs and do not overexert yourself that´s it!! Now you´re ready!!
A very important factor that all our travelers must take into account is the reservation process for the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu; due to the high demand and also for the preservation of this tourist route, Peruvian regulations establish a daily maximum of 250 tickets for this package. Remember also that all Inca Trail tours are suspended in February each year for maintenance work.
Therefore, it is good that you begin to manage your reservation with adequate anticipation; as of today, there are still vacancies for the end of July and the rest of the season that goes until January 2018; we update the availability for the Short Inca Trail in real time on our website, and you can also contact our staff directly for any additional information and also to start your reservation process

The Sacred Valley tour starts at 7:30 from your hotel in Cusco, our first stop is at the archaeological site of Pisac then we will visit the local handicraft market.
After Pisac we will go to the Urubamba Valley to visit the ruins of Ollantaytambo where our guide will provide you with important information about the history of the Incas. At noon we will return to the Urubamba Valley for lunch, then we will head to the town of Maras for a visit to the salt pans and the ruins of Moray, on the way back to Cusco we will visit a local family in Chinchero, at approximately 5pm we will be returning to Cusco.
We leave Cusco early in the morning headed to the Ollantaytambo stations where we will take the first train to Aguas Calientes, once we get to the town we will take the bus to Machu Picchu, you will have a guided tour of approximately 3 hours, our local guide will show you the most important places and then you will have free time to take your pictures.
Later on you will have to take the bus and go back to the town of Aguas Calientes and take the train back to Ollantaytambo, at 5 pm our driver will be waiting for you to take you back to Cusco on a 2 hour trip.
at approximately 4 am our transfer will be picking you up from your hotel to direct you to the bus that will take you to the beginning of the walk. Cusco Machu Picchu Tour with Rainbow Mountain – Detailed itinerary

Its geological formations reveal all its splendor, in contrast with the blue sky forming a formidable barrier between the coastal desert and the Amazon jungle, dominated by the beautiful Ausangate (6384 m), one of the great apus of this region.

Experiential Tourism In Patacancha 3 Days / 2 Nights – Detailed itinerary
To start this beautiful one-day adventure. At 8:00 am. Our professional guide and mobility will pass by your hotel in Cusco. Then, get away from the bustling city to the Chonta Canyon.
On the way, enjoy excellent panoramic views of deep valleys formed by steep mountains, snow-covered mountains and also visit the archeological sites of Killarumiyoc. It was a temple dedicated to the Moon (Mother Moon) and there you can admire the master sculpture in the form of a half-moon worked on a single rock; continue your journey to Tarawasi. The first day of walking will start from the village of Pumahuanca in the Sacred Valley. We will make our way quietly towards one of the side valleys covering about 14 km in total and ascending about 1150m/3373ft, as we head towards the village of Puyoc. On our way we will visit the small Inka site of Pumahuanca and learn more about native plants, flowers and birds that inhabit this region.
This route is little traveled by other companies, so we can enjoy the peace and tranquility of our environment without distractions or discomfort. Due to the fact that few people visit this area, there is a high probability that we can appreciate Vizcachas (a rabbit similar to a chinchilla), and perhaps also the Andean Fox. At night our camp will be located in Puyoc (4100m/13,451ft); place that is quite sterile due to the altitude, and where it would not be rare to appreciate snow during the dry season, therefore it is recommended to wear gloves and hats.
This will be the most spectacular day of the walk and lighter compared to the previous day. From our camp we will travel about 13 km to the village of Cuncani, a trail that is almost mostly downhill, as the opening is only 2 hours walk from the starting point.
As we head to Cuncani we will pass through snow-capped peaks high around us, also through quiet mountain lakes (including Yanacocha or “Agua Negra” lagoons). We will get to know the local people dressed in their traditional bright red clothes. This side of the open is completely culturally different compared to the other side, and as we descend from the open your guide will teach you about the people of these areas and their way of life. You will also be able to learn some Quechua phrases to interact with the local people.
This third day we will focus on getting to know the local people. After waking up early, our guide will take us to one of the houses in the area, where we will meet a local family. The people are incredibly welcoming and will be just as eager to learn about you as you are to learn about them – for that you will have already learned and mastered some phrases to be able to ask some questions (many for delight and fun). After the visit you will have the opportunity to give any gifts you have brought to the local people and also to buy some of the locally made alpaca products for which this region is famous.
Leaving Cuncani will take us a short distance (6km) to reach the Lares Hot Springs. Along the way we will cross several small communities and see people growing a variety of foods like Quinia and Tarwi, we will probably also see flocks of Andean parrots flying above us (they are easy to detect thanks to their penetrating squawks). After a relaxing bath in the hot springs, we will be picked up by our bus and driven back to the Sacred Valley, from where we will take our train to Machu Picchu.

We will wake up very early to take the first bus to Machu Picchu to enter the citadel as soon as it is opening. We will have a 2 hour guided tour of the site, during which you will learn about the Incas by visiting all the most important areas of the Inca citadel. After your tour you will have time to ascend Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (optional, if you have the permits and/or entrance tickets). In the afternoon we will take the train back to Ollantaytambo, from where we will continue in a van back to the city of Cusco.

Along the Lares trek you’ll find many Eucalyptus trees, which become very tall and sometimes you’ll find them in forests in the area. Another typical Andean tree is the Kiswar and the Queuña is a small tree/bush found in the area. There are also Lupinos which are beatiful blue and purple flowers along the route. You’ll also see the different plantations and farms cultivating corn, potatoes, Quinua, Kiwicha and grass for the farm animals.
Fauna
This rural area will have a lot of domesticated animals like cows, horses, llamas, alpacas, pigs, sheep, chickens, guinea pigs, dogs and cats. If you’re lucky you may be able to see some wild animals as well, like pumas, birds (Huallatas and Condors), foxes and skunks.
Is the walk difficult? Do I need to be in good physical condition?
All our walks (Inka Trail, Salkantay, Ausangate, Lares, etc) are moderately difficult, long. We recommend that if you plan to book any of these routes you should be in relatively good physical condition, in addition to acclimatizing. We therefore suggest arriving in Cusco at least 02 days before your departure from the trek to suit the altitude. During the two months prior to your hike we suggest a regular and moderate routine to improve endurance. We want you to have the best possible experience!

When should I arrive in Cusco or arrive at your office?
We require that all clients arrive in Cusco at least 48 hours before the start of their walk, although 03 nights before is ideal. You must pay your remaining balance two days before your departure for your trip. This will also ensure that you can acclimatize to the altitude to start your trek comfortably. Please note that your remaining balance must be paid in cash at our office.
Our office hours are Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Are walking sticks required?
For this walk more than any other, we recommend these canes, especially for people with known knee problems. The trail is full of steep and steep climbs, narrow Inkas stairs. These will help your balance and reduce the impact on your knees. *We ask you not to use poles with metal tips that damage the trail. *

Where can I keep my luggage that I don’t need to take on the trek?

What is the best time to take a trek?
The best time to make a walk with good weather is between the months of April – October, as we have the presence of clear skies and smaller scale rainfall fluvial. The driest months are between June and August, which is winter in the Andes.
From January to March is summer in Peru, which means the rainy season for Cusco and especially the Inka Trail.

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 4 Days – Detailed Itinerary
The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu starts when we pick you up from your hotel or hostel (5:30am approx.). We will go in our transport for an hour and a half to Ollantaytambo where we will make a stop for breakfast (not included in the price of the tour). After making a stop we will continue our trip by car to km 82, where the respective entrance controls to the Inca Trail are carried out. In this same place you must present your tickets along with your passport or identity document with which you made your reservation.
The Inca Trail begins at an altitude of 2,720 meters above sea level. Once we have passed the respective controls at the checkpoint, we will cross a hanging bridge over the Vilcanota River. The first day is easy and is considered the warm-up day as the terrain is relatively flat. This day we will have wonderful views of the Inca fortress Huillca Raccay, the incredible archaeological site of Llactapata (officially called “Patallacta”), the Urubamba mountain range that divides the jungle with the Andes, and the beautiful snowy W’akay Willca 5,860m. also known as the Veronica. Our first camp will be in Ayapata, which is located 60 minutes walk from the small town of Wayllabamba, at an altitude of 3,300m.
Distance covered: 14 km
Hiking Time: From 6 to 7 hours including rest and stop for lunch
This day is considered the most difficult and at the same time most gratifying of all the Inca Trail 4 Days, we will enjoy appreciating beautiful Andean landscapes and natural beauty. The day begins at 5:00 a.m. and after a good breakfast, we will begin the ascent for 4 hours until the highest point of the road, the Abra de Huarmihuañusca or “Paso de la Mujer Muerta” with a height of 4.200m. During the walk we will be able to appreciate that the vegetation is varied with native plants and trees like the “Polilepys” or “Q’ueuña”, which grow in the cloud forest at an altitude of 3,650m. After touring the 4 hours of ascent we will celebrate together having reached the highest point.
At this point we will do and rest and then we will descend for an hour and a half to the second point where we will have lunch (Pacamayo at 3.550m). After lunch we will start with the last part of the climb for 2 hours towards the Runkuraqay pass at an altitude of 3900m. Once in the pass and after a rest we will continue the descent for 1 hour and a half until we reach our camp Cachicocha (3600m).
Distance to travel: 16 km
Hiking Time: 9 to 1 hours including rest and stop for lunch.
On the third day we will only have 5 hours of walking approx. we will arrive at Wiñay Wayna which means: “Forever Young” to an Inca archaeological site that bears the same name as the camps; this archaeological site is 10 minutes from the third camp. This day we will start with a gentle moderate walk until we reach Phuyupatamarca which will be the third highest point on the road at an altitude of 3,680m. The views of the mountains, canyons and surroundings from this point are simply spectacular. After a brief rest we will visit the archaeological site of Phuyupatamarca, which means “City of Clouds”. The Inca site Phuyupatamarca is just a few minutes walk from the third pass. After visiting this site, we will continue walking through cloud forest until we reach the impressive Inca agricultural site of Intipata, then we will arrive at our camp Wiñay Wayna, at 2,680m.
Hiking Time: From 4 to 5 hours (including rest, after lunch no more walking)
We will start the day at 3:30am, after a very light breakfast we will go to the last checkpoint of the Inca Trail which is 10 minutes from the camp until 5.30am, after passing through this checkpoint we will go for 1 hour towards Inti Punku or “Puerta del Sol” where we will witness the arrival of the sun to Machu Picchu. This is the same place where you will have the first opportunity to admire Machu Picchu after 3 intense days of walking. After admiring the view of Machu Picchu from the door of the sun, we will walk for the last part of the tour to the place where you can take the classic photo of this ancient city. Finally, we enter Machu Picchu! Once in this modern wonder of the world, you will have a 2 hour guided tour by your own guide. After your guided tour, you will have some free time for you to continue exploring the citadel.
Once you have finished exploring the citadel you will have to take a bus that will take you to the town of Aguas Calientes. Here you will meet your guide so that you can share the last lunch (optional and not included in the price of the tour) and he can give you your return train tickets to Ollantaytambo, then you will be transferred from Ollantaytambo by car back to Cusco.

Recommendations
To do this tour, you must be in Cusco at least 2 days in advance to acclimatize.
Before going to Inca Trail 4 Days, take short walks around Cusco to better adapt to the weather or you can hire short tours. City tour, Sacred Valley, Salineras de Maras – Moray – Chinchero, southern valley or you can also visit Machu Picchu.
You should drink mate de coca which will help you adapt better to the climate.

Do I really need to reserve the Inca Trail in advance?
Permits for the Inca Trail are very limited, there are only 500 entries per day of which 300 will be used by trekking teams, cooks, porters and guides, this means that you must book many months in advance if you want to secure a place; we recommend doing so six months in advance. However, if you want to come during the high season (from May to September) you must make your reservation 8 or 10 months in advance.
When is the best time to travel the Inca Trail?
The high season on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is from May to September, as this time coincides with the holidays in the Western Hemisphere. These months offer probably the best trekking conditions with a dry and sunny climate. However as we told you before you will need to reserve the permits many months in advance. April, October and November are also great months to make the Inca Trail; there are fewer hikers, although it is likely that at least one day it rains during the trek.
It is also easier to find available permits, although they should still be booked months in advance. The rainy season runs from January to March, and if you decide to come during this time, expect some frequent rains. However, it is perfectly safe to make the walk, with the right raincoat. Again, it is much easier to get permits to travel the Inca Trail at this time of year.
The Inca Trail closes in February each year, because it is the rainiest month, and is used for maintenance and conservation of the trails on the trail. However, all alternative routes are open during this month.
Can the children make the Inca Trail?
Children accustomed to walking can make the Inca Trail, although personally we believe that to enjoy a route like this they should be at least 12 years old. But we have witnessed younger children completing the walk. Do I need a great physicist to travel the Inca Trail?
It is recommended that you have a good level of fitness, however, you don’t have to be an exercise fanatic. If you’re not in shape, it’s a good idea to start regular (uphill) walking training a few months before your adventure.
One of the biggest challenges about trekking in Peru is the altitude; the highest pass of the Inca Trail is 4,125, at the dead woman’s pass. To help you acclimatize and avoid the symptoms of altitude sickness, we recommend the following:
Avoid alcohol and smoking.
Drink plenty of fluids. Coca tea is an ancient remedy.
Avoid agitation and strenuous exercise upon arrival in Cusco.
Avoid sleeping pills.
Spend between 2 and 3 days to acclimatize before starting your trek.
I’m worried about being too slow for my group.
The walk along the Inca Trail is considered among the best in the world and if you want to enjoy it, do not see it as a race. “Go at your own pace”, enjoy the views, take pictures and catch your breath. Even the most leisurely hikers reach the campgrounds before nightfall.
The guide will always go with the last person in the group, instructing the fastest walkers to know where the stop and meet points are along the route.

Detailed Itinerary of Rainbow Mountain Peru Tour
We will pick you up at your hotel at 4:00 am. We will then embark on a 2 hour drive to the breakfast spot (included). Here we will serve you a buffet breakfast.
Then we will continue by car for 45 more minutes until we reach the beginning of the trek.

The Beautiful Colors of Rainbow Mountain
Vinicunca’s rainbow appearance is due to “a complex geological history of marine, lake and fluvial sediments,” according to a report by the Cultural Landscape Office of Cusco’s Deconcentrated Directorate of Culture.
These sediments, carried by the water that previously covered the area, date from between the Tertiary and Quaternary periods, i.e. from about 65 to two million years ago.
Over time, sediments formed layers (with different grain sizes) that today are seen as the stripes that attract tourists so much.
The movement of the tectonic plates in the area elevated these sediments until they became mountains.
Then they acquired their bright colors because of the oxidation of their minerals, exerted by the humidity of the area, and the erosion of them, explains to BBC Mundo César Muñoz, member of the Geological Society of Peru (SGP).
Muñoz and the study of the Cultural Landscape Office detail the composition of each strip according to its color.
Pink or fuchsia: a mixture of red clay, mud and sand.
Blanquecino: sandstone (quartz sand) and limestone.
Purple or lavender: marl (mixture of clay and calcium carbonate) and silicates.
Red: argilites and clays.
Green: clays rich in ferromagnesium (a mixture of iron and magnesium) and copper oxide.
Yellowish brown, mustard or gold: limonites, calcareous sandstones rich in sulphurous minerals (combined with sulphur).

We start the trip at 5:00 am from your hotel in Cusco. We will drive to Tambomachay just outside of Cusco our path leads us over high passes, and through valleys. The area is home to a wide variety of birds including Andean Geese, Partridges and even Condors around.
Our goal for today is to reach the Huchuyqosqo camp where we will spend the night. Along the way we will explore the area with beautiful views and some pre-Inca ruins. Huchuy Qosqo is the most important archaeological site in the Urubamba River valley, after Ollantaytambo and Pisac. Its archeological remains are impressive, although today the conservation of the site is little deteriorated due to antiquity.
It was built and preferred place of the eighth Inca ruler, Wiraqocha. From where it conquered the towns of the sacred valley. This Inca town was connected to the network of the famous Inca road to Machupicchu and the Amazon Rainforest and in 1540 was used by the Spanish as a farm.
Today, Huchuy Qosqo is a beautiful tourist circuit of 2 days and 3 days with connection to the Inca city of Machu Picchu. The tour takes place along an original Inca trail that articulates all the Inca villages of the sacred valley and the Amazon jungle. What does Huchuy Qosqo mean?
Huchuy Qosqo means “Little Cusco”, but it also has other names; one would be Qaqyaxaqixawana and another Qaqyaqhawana, this means “from where the rays are observed”; and without a doubt it is a good name since being 800 meters above the Sacred Valley of the Incas, gives you the opportunity to see the dramatic spectacle of lights and sound, at the moment in which rays and thunders descend from the sky to crash against the ground. Others say that the site was probably known in Inca times as “Caquia Jaquijahuana”.
Huchuy Qosqo Archaeological Complex (Qaqyaqawana)
The enclosure located in Huchuy Qosqo, is called Qaqyaqawana; a Quechua name that refers to the place where you look at the lightning. This archaeological site is located in the upper third of the mountain called Qaqya (thunder), and exhibits one of the most impressive works of topographical modification through the use of terraces, modulating the edges of precipices and vertical ravines over the Vilcanota Valley, culminating in platforms that were used as ceremonial esplanades, around which can still be found standing, several architectural structures made of stone and adobe. Materials used and worked with great criteria, achieving a fine finish.
In addition, the structures of the enclosure are distributed in such a way that they resemble it architecturally to the city of Cusco; it is for this reason that at the beginning of the XX century it receives the name of Huchuy Qosqo (small Cusco).
One of the most outstanding characteristics of this archeological site is the use of lithic material combined with adobe and mud. This demonstrates the knowledge and mastery of different construction materials, used with high technology, especially adobe, the walls built of this material, centuries old, even defy the strong climatic inclemency of the area, seismic movements and of course the passage of time.
What to see in Huchuy Qosqo (Qaqyaqawana)?

You have to know that´s NOT a 2 day trek it’s actually only ONE hiking day on day 1.
Important: The Peruvian government and the ministry of culture have established new rules for those doing the Inca Trail this 2022.
If you arrive to Machu Picchu through the 2-day Inca Trail, you will only be able to visit the upper part of Machu Picchu on your way out.
This means that once you arrive at Machu Picchu on day 1 you will have time to take pictures and visit the highest part of Machu Picchu. Then you will have to leave. On your second day you will only be able to visit the lower part of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.
The 2 day Inca trail is relatively easy compared to the 4 day inca trail. You need to take the train from Ollantaytambo to km 104 from where you start the trek to Machu Picchu after the trek you spend the night in Aguas Calientes in a Hotel

The most important thing to know is there are only two seasons in Cusco: wet and dry season. The rainy season is from November until March and the dry season is April until October. Weather changes so much throughout the day, We wouldn’t recommend shorts for hiking the short Inca trail. You could wear trail pants that zip off into shorts, bring a fleece with you for the morning of your hike. Detailed Itinerary of the Short 2-Day Inca Trail | Machu Picchu 2 Day Hike
At 3:40 am, our staff will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco to take you to the Ollantaytambo train station. Then you will travel by train to the beginning of the Short Inca Trail 2 days, KM – 104 of the railroad, here your guide will be waiting for you. You will pass the control accompanied by your authorized official guide for the Inca Trail.
Start enjoying your adventure by visiting the archaeological site of Chachabamba, then continue on an ascending path until you reach Wiñaywayna another beautiful archaeological center strategically located. Here, take a brief rest to enjoy your cold lunch and then continue through the rainforest appreciating the abundance of biodiversity (flora and fauna) until you reach the highest point of the route, Puerta de Sol (2,720 meters / 8,922 feet).
From the Sun Gate, appreciate the scenic beauty of the Andes, steep mountains covered with the green mantle and some white, deep valleys formed by the Urubamba River. Also, marvel at the first impact of the Inca city of Machupicchu.

It is necessary to acclimatize in Cusco, one or two days before starting the tour. For a good acclimatization it is necessary to rest as much as possible, to eat little, to drink abundant liquid; specially the mate of coca that possesses known healing and digestive properties. An adequate acclimatization avoids that it affects the “soroche” or bad of height, that could cause numerous annoyances to the health.

Between Andean mountains and tropical forest there is a great Inca Trail crossing the mountains and the Sacred Valley. The first archaeological site we will visit is Chachabamba (2,200 m / 7,218 ft) located next to the Urubamba River and at the top is Wiñaywayna (2650 m / 8,694 ft) then we will go to Intipunku (2,720 m / 8,924 ft) where we will have a panoramic view of Machu Picchu (2,490 m / 8,169 ft), you can also find a wide variety of flora and fauna as well as a diversity of birds.
The walk takes approximately 6 to 7 hours to reach the Puerta del Sol known as Inti Punku, where you can get the first panoramic views of Machu Picchu. Prior to the walk the guide will be presented at your hotel and will give precise information about the walk and recommendations of the things you should bring, you will also be given the tickets (entrance to the Inca Trail, train ticket, etc..) ideal time at which you can make your queries.
One of the main attractions along the route is the ancient network of settlements built on granite rock by the Incas such as Wiñay Wayna and Phuyupatamarca immersed in an overwhelming natural scenery. Hundreds of varieties of orchids, multicolored birds, and dream landscapes provide the ideal setting for a route that the walker should walk at least once.
What happens if you renew your passport or document?
If you renew or change the number or names of your passport or documents after booking the tour/walk, you must send us a photograph of the new passport or document; we will make the change with the authorities before you arrive in Cusco; the extra cost to make the change is $20 which will cover expenses for the change of Inca Trail Entry, MachuPicchu Entry and train tickets. If you do not wish to pay the $20 for the corresponding changes you must bring your new and old passport or document to show it to the authorities (Inca Trail, entrance to MachuPicchu, train tickets). If you don’t have the 2 passports you will have to buy a new entrance to the Inca Trail, MachuPicchu and by train on your own, the costs could be around $100.

Can I exchange my hotel in Aguas Calientes?
Yes, each traveler has their own expectations of accommodations. That is why we offer you the option of reserving your own independent hostel.

If you wish to book your own independent hotel we will offer you a discount of 10 dollars per person on the price of the trip. You can use this money to pay for an alternative hotel.
The return train schedule: The return train that includes the package is the Expedition; the departure are: 2:55pm, DEPENDING ON AVAILABILITY. If you prefer the earlier train return we can book it for an additional $25; the times are: 2:55pm or 4:35pm. You also have the option to reserve the Vistadome train for an additional cost of $65. Please let us know in advance which is the train schedule of your preference. It is important to know that none of the trains go directly to Cusco, trains only arrive at Ollantaytambo or Poroy stations. In any of the cases we will always guarantee a bus of return to Cusco.
Can I change my return train ticket from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo for an earlier one?
Yes, you can make this change personally at the Aguas Calientes train station. However, they will ask you to pay an additional fee for changing the ticket and this change will be subject to the availability of spaces and timetables on the train. In this case you will be responsible for assuming the cost of your return transport from Ollantaytambo to Cusco.
How long will it take to return to Cusco?
You will travel for about three and a half hours before returning to Cusco. And this is divided into a one-and-a-half hour train ride to the Ollantaytambo train station. From there our driver will pick you up outside the train station. Our driver will be waiting for you with a sign with your name on it, so there will be no confusion. If you don’t see our driver initially you just have to wait for him outside the station. Once our driver has picked you up you will travel for another hour and a half before returning to Cusco.
Health and Safety: All of our participants must inform us if they have or have had any illness that may affect their personal or group progress during the walk. They must also bring their own medications. We recommend that you visit your doctor before making your reservation if you have any health problems.
Where to store your belongings: You can leave or store the things that you will not take to the Inca Trail in the hotel or hostel where you are staying. Most of these establishments have stores where they will keep their things. If you do not trust the place where you are staying, we will gladly store your belongings in our office.
When is the best time to travel the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?
From May to September (dry season) is the ideal time to travel the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. These months are generally good for the crossing due to the low frequency of rains.
In the months of November to March the summer (rainy season) is present. This season is usually very rainy, which makes walking and access difficult. You will not even be able to walk the Inca Trail in February due to rainfall and maintenance work.
Overall Difficulty – Easy to Moderate difficult (depends on your level of fitness).
If you’re concerned about making it because you are relatively unfit, we recommend doing at least two long-distance (5km) mountain hikes in your home country before you undertake your Machu Picchu trek.
If you find you are out of breath you are pushing yourself too hard, reduce distance and intensity until you get to a comfortable pace and slowly build up your endurance. Make sure you go slowly on your trek, particularly on the ascents up. Breathe deep into your lungs and do not overexert yourself that´s it!! Now you´re ready!!
