Located in the heart of Cusco (Peru), the former Inca capital of the Inca Empire, is a sacred wonder that has stood the test of time: the Coricancha, the Temple of the Sun. This amazing architectural masterpiece, also known as Qoricancha or Koricancha, is a testimony to the ingenuity and spiritual splendor of the Inca civilization.

History of Coricancha

It is believed that Manco Capac began the construction of the Temple of the Sun in Cusco in 1200. The temple was originally known as Inticancha, (Inti means sun and cancha means temple). Some years later, the Inca Pachacutec rebuilt the temple and covered it with gold. Consequently, the name was changed to Coricancha. The walls of the temple were once covered with gold plates, according to spanish chroniclers. It is believed that there was so much gold that when the Spanish demanded a ransom of gold in 1533 for the life of their leader Atahualpa, most of the gold was collected from Coricancha.

In addition to destroying the Spanish also plundered the magnificent riches of Coricancha during their conquest. It was when they built the convent of Santo Domingo over the temple of the sun without caring about its importance and spiritual significance.

Coricancha Architecture

The temple of the sun or Coricancha in Cusco, unlike many Inca temples, shows a very advanced construction technique, which indicates how important it was to the Incas. The walls of the temple are finely carved and polished as if a machine had been used, there are even holes as if they had used a drill which would have crossed the stone with such perfection.

Like most Inca constructions, the construction of the Coricancha also shows an ingenious design to withstand seismic activity. A widened foundation, combined with an inclination of 3 to 5 degrees, confers a remarkable stability to the walls, allowing them to withstand the test of centuries of earthquakes.

Main Attractions of Coricancha

Temple of the Sun

The temple of the sun was the most important temple among all the temples at the complex. It was dedicated to the sun god, Inti. According to the academy the inner walls of the temple, located in the northern corner of the complex, were covered with gold.

During the excavations, gold objects related to the cult of the god, a gold statue of Inti with jewels inlaid, were found. This is why it is believed that this temple would have been the most important temple.

Temple of the Moon

Just like the temple of the sun, the chronicle of Garcilaso de la Vega describes that inside this enclosure were kept the mummies of the coyas or queens. The moon was considered the wife of the sun, so the temple of the moon was essential to Coricancha. It was beautifully clad in silver and with symbols of the moon.

Rainbow Temple

For the Incas the rainbow was also a very important deity, this is why they had a temple dedicated to it. They believed that the rainbow was produced by the sun. Unfortunately, most of this temple was destroyed to make room for the buildings of the Dominican convent.

The Temple of Venus and the Stars

The Incas believed that the stars were daughters of the Moon and the Sun. This temple was used as a center of worship to this small deity and, according to archaeologists, the Incas made sacrifices and offerings in this enclosure.

Solar Garden

The Solar Garden was used as a warehouse to store many offerings brought by the subjects to pay homage to the Sun God. This included various objects, among them flowers and foliage from Tahuantinsuyo. Studies have indicated that these offerings were made with gold and silver. They were so numerous that they completely filled the vast garden.

The Fountains

According to archaeological research in the original Coricancha, there would have been about five fountains. It is believed the origin of the water was a secret. Each fountain had a unique religious significance and, in the characteristic style of Coricancha, adorned with exquisite metals.

Opening Hours

The entrance hours to the Temple are:

Monday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Sunday from 14:00 to 17:00 h.

COST: S/.15.00 for both foreign and national tourists (Tourist Ticket does not cover).
