Humantay Lake Hike

Difficulty:

The hike to Humantay Lake is shorter but steeper than the trek to Rainbow Mountain. From the trailhead to the Lake it may take you about 1 hour, keeping a steady pace with a few breaks along the way. The ascent is continuous, like climbing stairs the whole way. The trail is steep and sometimes slippery, especially in some sections. To walk the trail comfortably, we highly recommend hiking shoes, which provide stability and protection against the terrain.

Humantay Lake Altitude:

The hike begins at an altitude of 12,700 feet, where adventurers embark on the exciting trek to Humantay Lake. As hikers make their way up through the rugged Andean landscape, they gradually reach the impressive altitude of 13,900 feet. This ascent offers a challenging but rewarding experience, allowing hikers to immerse themselves in the beauty of Andes. Along the way, be prepared to encounter varied terrain and breathtaking views, making every step into the lake a memorable adventure.

How long is the hike to Humantay Lake?

The hike to Humantay Lake typically takes 1.5 hr (the longest) from the starting point. The exact duration may vary depending on factors such as, speed and fitness level. If the hike to the Humantay Lake is difficult for you or you have limitations, you can choose to ride a horse. Locals offer horse rental services for this purpose. (It is strongly recommended to go back down on foot, as the terrain may be too steep for the horse).

Know What to Pack for Humantay Lake Private Tour from Cusco

There is a lot to consider before you leave for your Peru journey, such as what supplies and gear are needed. It is important to know that the trails in the area can be treacherous so make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of food, water, and sun protection. Be prepared with a full first aid kit and don’t forget to bring your camera for stunning memories of these breathtaking mountains!

  • Original Passport: Before leaving your hotel be sure to bring your original passport, note that if you do not bring it you will not be able to visit Machu Picchu. The passport must be the same one you sent us to buy the Machu Picchu tickets.
  • Clothing: The weather in the Sacred Valley is very enjoyable, but it does not mean that it does not rain at all. That’ s why it is important to always carry a pack of T-shirts and add warmth with long-sleeved clothing and a fleece jacket.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers with good traction are perfect for hiking in and around the Inca archaeological complexes in the Sacred Valley.
  • Sun protection: Do not forget a quality sunscreen. Long-sleeved shirts and pants are recommended for better protection from the sun. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. The sun is quite intense depending on the place you are visting.
  • Rainy season: For those viting the Sacred Valley from Ollantaytambo during the rainy season, pack a waterproof jacket or a travel-size umbrella or plastic ponchos. Plastic ponchos are available to buy in Cusco and the Sacred Valley area.
  • Bottled water: Staying hydrated is important for preventing altitude sickness. At Come See Peru, we provide a free water bottle to all our clients for all our tours of the Sacred Valley from Ollantaytambo.
  • Money: Do not forget to carry some cash in Peruvian currency.
Also have some coins and small notes in your pockets since often smaller shops, kiosks or vendors don’t have enough change.
  • Snacks: Energy bars, candies, cookies, etc (you can also buy fresh fruits at one of the villages’ markets).
  • Insect repellent: There are mosquitoes in the secred valley. We recommend opting for non-aerosol options to be more eco-friendly. Bands, patches and lotions are less likely to affect the people around you.
  • Toilet paper: Some restrooms do not provide toilet paper or antibacterial hand gel.
  • Personal first-aid kit: Our tour guides are forbidden to give any madication to tourits. These rules come from the government that does not allow the tour guide to use pills due to different names and components of drugs by country. For this reason, we always advise taking a basic first aid kit, pills for most common problems.

Wonderful Sacred Valley Tour!

May 2025

My sister and I were referred to Come See Peru from a friend, and we are so grateful for the referral. We did the Sacred Valley Cultural Experience. Carlos (our guide) and Michael (our driver) were knowledgeable, flexible, and fun!

Here are a few specific aspects that I would like to mention:

1. Flexible. We really appreciated the flexibility that we were afforded. We did our half day Sacred Valley trip in between accommodation switches. So we were picked up in Ollantaytambo and dropped off in Cusco. Additionally, we had to be picked up a bit later than the original start time, and Carlos and Michael were happy to accommodate.

2. Informative. Carlos expertly led us around the three sites we visited (Ollantaytambo ruins, The Salt Mines, The ruins of Moray). He actually took us in an order that allowed for there to be less tourists when we were present, which was really nice. He provided us with historical context and answered all of our questions.

3. Patient. Carlos and Michael gave us time to sit in the beauty that is these amazing locations. Carlos is a wonderful photographer as well and offered to take our picture at some really neat places in each location. When we did the Chicha tasting and salt demonstration, they waited while we shopped. We never felt rushed, which we appreciated.

4. Fun! Overall, we had a really good time with Carlos and Michael. We chatted and laughed about all sorts of things. We appreciated the private tour aspect so we could really go at our own flow and connect and just enjoy.

Thank you Carlos and Michael for a lovely exploration of the Sacred Valley! You will be at the top of our list when we return to see Pisac and Chinchero!

May 2025

Wow! I booked a customizable 2-day tour to include all of the main Sacred Valley sights because I wanted to start the first day in Cusco and end in Ollantaytambo and use the tour as transportation as well. Come See Peru was so easy to work with, communicating extremely quickly via WhatsApp to design my perfect itinerary. They also suggested some stops that I did not know about.

Our guide Ruben was positively incredible and really made this tour amazing. He presented the history, culture, geography, & food information in such a compelling way! We learned SO MUCH because he is an incredible storyteller. None of the main sites (moray, maras, ollantaytambo, etc) have much signage and we wouldn’t have been able to appreciate them half as well without Ruben. He was also an amazing photographer, always choosing the best locations to take photos of my husband and I.
The vehicle was a comfortable van, which was private, and we had a driver who dropped off and picked up whenever we needed and also stayed with our luggage the day that it was in the car.

Overall, the price was fair for the value received and I would definitely recommend reaching out to Come See Peru to build a customized tour for your trip to the Sacred Valley!

My wife, and I actually took three tours in three dayswith Come See Peru. This were for Machu Picchu, Pisac / Llama farm and the half-day tour on the outskirts of Cusco. The company provided excellent tour guides and took care of every detail, so that our tours were totally stressed free.
