From Cusipata route, the Rainbow Mountain hike begins at 4,630 m (15,190 ft). The trail is about 3.5 km (2.1 mi) one way, taking 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the summit.

Following the hike, we drive back to the same local restaurant where we had breakfast earlier in the day. The drive takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on road conditions.

Return to Cusco
After lunch, we begin the final leg of our journey, the drive back to Cusco. The drive distance is100 km (62 miles) approx. The drive time around 2.5 to 3 hours (Depending on the traffic conditions), the estimated arrival in Cusco is between 3:30 and 4:00 PM at the hotel.

Your journey to one of Peru’s most spectacular natural attractions begins early in the morning. At 4:00 AM, our expert guide and private driver will arrive at your hotel in Cusco to pick you up. You will begin a scenic 2-hour drive through charming villages.

Around 5:45 AM, you will arrive at a local restaurant in a nice village, where a buffet breakfast awaits. You will enjoy freshly brewed coca tea, local breads, eggs, fruit and hot dishes that will fuel you for the high-altitude hike ahead. After breakfast your guide will give you a final safety briefing, check your equipment and answer any last minute questions about the hike.

Then you will continue driving another 45 minutes to one hour to the trailhead. Reaching an elevation of (approx. 4,600 meters / 15,100 feet).

The ascent of Rainbow Mountain may be moderate to difficult due to the high altitude.

You’ll walk for about 2 hours, passing through the beauty of the Peruvian Andes. Along the way, you may see vicuñas, alpacas and perhaps even a soaring condor overhead. Your guide will keep a relaxed pace, ensuring you stay comfortable and acclimated throughout the entire hike. Oxygen and first aid support are always available, and horses can be arranged if needed.

As you reach the final ridge, prepare for the breathtaking view of the area. At the summit, standing at 5,036 meters (16,522 ft), you’ll have ample time to explore the panoramic viewpoints, take photos. This is not a group tour but a private tour, you’ll enjoy the trek at your own pace, without feeling rushed.

The lookout of Rainbow Mountain offers a unique perspective of the Andean highlands and is one of the most photographed hidden gems in the region.

From there, you will begin the 2-hour descent back to the base, walking gently downhill with panoramic views on either side. Upon arrival, your driver will be waiting to take you back to the local restaurant for lunch.

The hike to Rainbow Mountain is moderately challenging mainly because of the altitude, not the distance. It’s around 4 miles (6.5 km) round trip, but you’re walking at over 5,000 meters (16,500 feet). If you’re not used to high altitudes, it is best to take it slow and stay hydrated. Our Rainbow Mountain private tour includes the option to ride a horse if needed.

Yes, horses are available for rent directly from locals at the start of the trail in the community. If you’re concerned about altitude or just want to save your energy, riding a horse is a good option.

We usually pick you up from your hotel in Cusco around 4:00 a.m to beat the crowds and enjoy the place with no so many people. But considering this is a private tour, we can adjust the departure time based on your preferences and pace.

It’s possible, especially if you haven’t acclimated properly in Cusco first. We always recommend spending at least 2 days in Cusco before doing the hike. Our guides carry oxygen and first aid kit just in case.

It depends on the weather. When it is sunny, the colors are very vivid. If it is cloudy or raining, the colors may appear duller. Either way, the views are breathtaking and the scenery is unique in Peru.

You can find very basic restrooms at the check point and also along the route, depending. We recommend that you bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, just in case.

It depends on their age, fitness level and altitude tolerance. We have had families with children as young as 8 years old (with horse support).
