The Lares Valley is located between the eastern slope of the Andes and the northern part of the Urubamba Mountain Range. It is a place with beautiful glacial lagoons and warm subtropical ravines, as well as a great variety of vegetation and wild fauna.

It is surrounded by a mountain chain of the mountain range, where the snow-capped mountains of Verónica, Sawasiray, Pitusiray and Chicón are found. It is home to small communities of Quechua-speaking farmers, who maintain their customs of llama and alpaca grazing, tuber cultivation and tissue production.

Overview

Because of all the above, this valley offers a great variety of tourist attractions. It is common for tourists to reach the lares to interact with the local communities and learn more about their traditions, also gives the possibility of doing one of the best trekking routes in Cusco.

The 04 Days Trekking tour from Lares to Machu Picchu combines the best high Andean landscapes of the Sacred Valley, passing through ravines, snow-capped mountains, lagoons and colorful native villages that still preserve their traditions and lifestyle learned by their ancestors. You can also learn a little about the typical flora and fauna of the region.

On our way we will appreciate the Andean camelids such as llama, alpacas, sheep, etc. In our way to Lares we will find small communities that will show us part of their culture and customs, where we will share our experiences with them. A tour not to be missed in your visit to the beautiful Imperial City of Cusco, will be an incredible experience in the best of the Andes.

Tour Itinerary

COLCA CANYON FULL DAY – Detailed itinerary

The first day of walking will start from the village of Pumahuanca in the Sacred Valley. We will make our way quietly towards one of the side valleys covering about 14 km in total and ascending about 1150m/3373ft, as we head towards the village of Puyoc. On our way we will visit the small Inka site of Pumahuanca and learn more about native plants, flowers and birds that inhabit this region.

This route is little traveled by other companies, so we can enjoy the peace and tranquility of our environment without distractions or discomfort. Due to the fact that few people visit this area, there is a high probability that we can appreciate Vizcachas (a rabbit similar to a chinchilla), and perhaps also the Andean Fox. At night our camp will be located in Puyoc (4100m/13,451ft); place that is quite sterile due to the altitude, and where it would not be rare to appreciate snow during the dry season, therefore it is recommended to wear gloves and hats.

Accommodation: Camp

This will be the most spectacular day of the walk and lighter compared to the previous day. From our camp we will travel about 13 km to the village of Cuncani, a trail that is almost mostly downhill, as the opening is only 2 hours walk from the starting point.

As we head to Cuncani we will pass through snow-capped peaks high around us, also through quiet mountain lakes (including Yanacocha or “Agua Negra” lagoons). We will get to know the local people dressed in their traditional bright red clothes. This side of the open is completely culturally different compared to the other side, and as we descend from the open your guide will teach you about the people of these areas and their way of life. You will also be able to learn some Quechua phrases to interact with the local people.

Accommodation: Camp

This third day we will focus on getting to know the local people. After waking up early, our guide will take us to one of the houses in the area, where we will meet a local family. The people are incredibly welcoming and will be just as eager to learn about you as you are to learn about them – for that you will have already learned and mastered some phrases to be able to ask some questions (many for delight and fun). After the visit you will have the opportunity to give any gifts you have brought to the local people and also to buy some of the locally made alpaca products for which this region is famous.

Leaving Cuncani will take us a short distance (6km) to reach the Lares Hot Springs. Along the way we will cross several small communities and see people growing a variety of foods like Quinia and Tarwi, we will probably also see flocks of Andean parrots flying above us (they are easy to detect thanks to their penetrating squawks). After a relaxing bath in the hot springs, we will be picked up by our bus and driven back to the Sacred Valley, from where we will take our train to Machu Picchu.

Accommodation: Golden Sunrise Machu Picchu Hotel *** or similar

We will wake up very early to take the first bus to Machu Picchu to enter the citadel as soon as it is opening. We will have a 2 hour guided tour of the site, during which you will learn about the Incas by visiting all the most important areas of the Inca citadel. After your tour you will have time to ascend Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (optional, if you have the permits and/or entrance tickets). In the afternoon we will take the train back to Ollantaytambo, from where we will continue in a van back to the city of Cusco.

May 2025

My sister and I were referred to Come See Peru from a friend, and we are so grateful for the referral. We did the Sacred Valley Cultural Experience. Carlos (our guide) and Michael (our driver) were knowledgeable, flexible, and fun!

Here are a few specific aspects that I would like to mention:

1. Flexible. We really appreciated the flexibility that we were afforded. We did our half day Sacred Valley trip in between accommodation switches. So we were picked up in Ollantaytambo and dropped off in Cusco. Additionally, we had to be picked up a bit later than the original start time, and Carlos and Michael were happy to accommodate.

2. Informative. Carlos expertly led us around the three sites we visited (Ollantaytambo ruins, The Salt Mines, The ruins of Moray). He actually took us in an order that allowed for there to be less tourists when we were present, which was really nice. He provided us with historical context and answered all of our questions.

3. Patient. Carlos and Michael gave us time to sit in the beauty that is these amazing locations. Carlos is a wonderful photographer as well and offered to take our picture at some really neat places in each location. When we did the Chicha tasting and salt demonstration, they waited while we shopped. We never felt rushed, which we appreciated.

4. Fun! Overall, we had a really good time with Carlos and Michael. We chatted and laughed about all sorts of things. We appreciated the private tour aspect so we could really go at our own flow and connect and just enjoy.

Thank you Carlos and Michael for a lovely exploration of the Sacred Valley! You will be at the top of our list when we return to see Pisac and Chinchero!

May 2025

Wow! I booked a customizable 2-day tour to include all of the main Sacred Valley sights because I wanted to start the first day in Cusco and end in Ollantaytambo and use the tour as transportation as well. Come See Peru was so easy to work with, communicating extremely quickly via WhatsApp to design my perfect itinerary. They also suggested some stops that I did not know about.

Our guide Ruben was positively incredible and really made this tour amazing. He presented the history, culture, geography, & food information in such a compelling way! We learned SO MUCH because he is an incredible storyteller. None of the main sites (moray, maras, ollantaytambo, etc) have much signage and we wouldn’t have been able to appreciate them half as well without Ruben. He was also an amazing photographer, always choosing the best locations to take photos of my husband and I.
The vehicle was a comfortable van, which was private, and we had a driver who dropped off and picked up whenever we needed and also stayed with our luggage the day that it was in the car.

Overall, the price was fair for the value received and I would definitely recommend reaching out to Come See Peru to build a customized tour for your trip to the Sacred Valley!

May 2025

My wife, and I actually took three tours in three dayswith Come See Peru. This were for Machu Picchu, Pisac / Llama farm and the half-day tour on the outskirts of Cusco. The company provided excellent tour guides and took care of every detail, so that our tours were totally stressed free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the walk difficult? Do I need to be in good physical condition?

All our walks (Inka Trail, Salkantay, Ausangate, Lares, etc) are moderately difficult, long. We recommend that if you plan to book any of these routes you should be in relatively good physical condition, in addition to acclimatizing. We therefore suggest arriving in Cusco at least 02 days before your departure from the trek to suit the altitude. During the two months prior to your hike we suggest a regular and moderate routine to improve endurance. We want you to have the best possible experience!

I have a food allergy. Can I still participate?

Please detail your allergy condition at the time of booking, as well as the severity of your reaction and any medications you take in case of emergency.

If your allergy is severe, we ask that you be accompanied by a friend or person fully aware and responsible for your situation and ready with any medication.

WE CANNOT ACCEPT CLIENTS WITH LIFE-THREATENING ALLERGIES.

When should I arrive in Cusco or arrive at your office?

We require that all clients arrive in Cusco at least 48 hours before the start of their walk, although 03 nights before is ideal. You must pay your remaining balance two days before your departure for your trip. This will also ensure that you can acclimatize to the altitude to start your trek comfortably. Please note that your remaining balance must be paid in cash at our office.

Our office hours are Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Are walking sticks required?

For this walk more than any other, we recommend these canes, especially for people with known knee problems. The trail is full of steep and steep climbs, narrow Inkas stairs. These will help your balance and reduce the impact on your knees. *We ask you not to use poles with metal tips that damage the trail. *

We can rent you walking sticks for $15.

Where can I keep my luggage that I don’t need to take on the trek?

Any luggage that is not necessary for your walk can be stored at your hotel in Cusco (most hotels offer this service free of charge). In case your hotel does not offer this service, we will store your luggage safely in our office.

What is the best time to take a trek?

The best time to make a walk with good weather is between the months of April – October, as we have the presence of clear skies and smaller scale rainfall fluvial. The driest months are between June and August, which is winter in the Andes.

From January to March is summer in Peru, which means the rainy season for Cusco and especially the Inka Trail.

Where does my trek start and end?

It starts and ends at your hotel.

I want to have a different train option to the one you offer me, is this possible?

If you wish to change your company or train route (Vistadome de Perú Rail, Ollantaytambo or the entire route to Poroy), or your departure time, additional charges may apply. You should talk to one of our sales agents to ask about availability and additional costs.

Flora

Along the Lares trek you’ll find many Eucalyptus trees, which become very tall and sometimes you’ll find them in forests in the area. Another typical Andean tree is the Kiswar and the Queuña is a small tree/bush found in the area. There are also Lupinos which are beatiful blue and purple flowers along the route. You’ll also see the different plantations and farms cultivating corn, potatoes, Quinua, Kiwicha and grass for the farm animals.

Fauna

This rural area will have a lot of domesticated animals like cows, horses, llamas, alpacas, pigs, sheep, chickens, guinea pigs, dogs and cats. If you’re lucky you may be able to see some wild animals as well, like pumas, birds (Huallatas and Condors), foxes and skunks.
