About Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)

Located approximately 3 hours southeast of Cusco, Rainbow Mountain also locally known as Vinicunca or Montaña de Siete Colores gets its vibrant colors from natural mineral deposits layered over millions of years. Its remote location and elevation kept it hidden from the public until recently, becoming one of Peru’s best-kept secrets, now revealed to the world.

The route itself is relatively easy – a wide dirt road with a gentle gradient, but the real challenge is the elevation. The thin air makes breathing difficult, and even fit travelers can feel tired more quickly than usual.

Tour Difficulty & Altitude:

  • Maximum Elevation: 5,036 meters / 16,522 feet
  • Hiking Distance: Approx. 6 km (round trip)
  • Difficulty: Moderate (we adjust the pace to your comfort)
  • Altitude Tips: Spend at least 1 day in Cusco before this tour to acclimatize.

Worried About Altitude Sickness? You’re Not Alone

Let’s be honest, climbing 5,000 meters may sound extreme, if you’re wondering “Will I get altitude sickness on Rainbow Mountain?”, you’re not alone. Many travelers wonder the same thing too.

But here’s the good news: you can prepare and enjoy the adventure safely.

We recommend spending at least 2 days in Cusco to acclimatize, drink plenty of water and take it easy. This is your private tour, so there is no pressure to rush. Our guide carries oxygen and knows exactly what to do if you get sick. And yes, horses are available if you need one.

You have it all. We are with you every step of the way.

Rainbow Mountain Hike

Difficulty:

The hike is rated moderate to difficult, the route presents several factors that contribute to its level of difficulty. One of the main challenges of hiking Rainbow Mountain is the terrain itself. Hikers traverse rocky slopes, uneven trails and steep climbs that demand good balance and endurance.

Altitude is a major factor on this trek. Cusco, the starting point of the hike, is already at high altitude, and as hikers make their way up to Rainbow Mountain, the air is even thinner. Proper acclimatization is essential to mitigate the effects of altitude sickness and ensure a safe and enjoyable trek.

Fitness Level Requirements:

Due to the uneven terrain and the high altitude, a good level of fitness is recommended for this trek. Previous experience on similar hikes and regular cardiovascular exercise can help prepare you for the demands of the Rainbow Mountain hike.

For those with limitations, renting a horse for the hike up to Rainbow Mountain is a practical solution. Locals offer this service along the trail to assist tourists. Opting for a horseback ride facilitates accessibility and saves energy, ensuring that everyone can participate in the adventure.

Great value and great service

The tour was great and the organisation was immaculate. The driver and guide were very polite, punctual and informative, the process was easy and the tour operator had a briefing call with us to give us all the timings. They also printed out all tickets for us which made every step go smoothly. The only tiny feedback point would be to send the itinerary via WhatsApp or email ahead of time, but it is such a minor thing. I would absolutely recommend it and use again!

Amazing experience and great staff!

I can not say enough positive things to encapsulate how amazing this company is. They were so communicative and helpful for our trip. We started out in Cusco and they did a private pickup to/from the train station. Coordinated our entry tickets and a private guide for Machu Picchu. Carlos was our planner and walked us through every step and answered every question. Alex our driver was punctual and very great with pickup and drop off. And our guide, Anibal, was fantastic. He took the tour to our pace and was SO knowledgeable. He gave us some fun stories and great memories! If you are ever looking for a tour company in Peru, choose Come See Peru!

Amazing, well planned trip to Machu Picchu

Our group of 5 did a one day trip to Machu Picchu with pickup from Sacred Valley and drop off in Cusco. Carlos helped us tremendously in organizing the schedule and all needed tickets, and he checked up on us throughout the day to ensure we didn't have any problems. Carlos was extremely responsive and quick to answer any questions, and made us feel comfortable that the trip would go as planned. Our driver Alex and Machu Picchu tour guide Anibal were also excellent. Alex was flexible and navigated different pick up and drop off points and also a pit stop to grab our luggage. Anibal was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions throughout the tour, we did circuits 1 and 3, which was a perfect combination to not only get the views up top but also be in the ruins down below. If we were to come back to Peru, would definitely use them again for tours.

Excellent experience, highly recommend!

The team that helped us was very communicative and very clear on what we needed to bring and what was going to happen throughout the day. They were always available to answer questions. Incredible, everything super organized and very friendly staff!

A 10: friendly, effective, and professional

Very happy from all points of view. Super well organized, a support at all times for any necessary organizational detail (we were a large group coming from many countries, which made it not easy), the explanations and the tour itself were very complete, and the guides were extremely friendly. I would definitely recommend them.

Well organized tour & very friendly staff!

Everything went according to plan; it was well organized and the staff was friendly. I highly recommend it.

Machu Picchu with Family

Very good communication for coordinating the tour, competitive price, the guides were very good and fun.

Amazing experience – Highly recommended!

Julio from Come See Peru helped us organize an incredible and truly unforgettable trip. I am German and got married in Peru, so I wanted to bring my friends and family to discover how wonderful this country is. Thanks to Julio and his team, everything was perfectly organized from beginning to end. They took care of every detail and made sure everyone felt welcome, comfortable, and well looked after. Even today, my family and friends still talk about the amazing memories they made during this trip. Visiting Machu Picchu is always a unique and magical experience, but being welcomed with such warmth and genuine care made it even more special. The team was always attentive, making sure everyone was happy and felt at home. Thank you, Julio and the entire Come See Peru team, for making this journey so memorable. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a professional, reliable, and caring travel agency in Peru.

Excellent service!

The guide was punctual, very attentive, friendly, and provided us with all the information.

Additional information for this trip

Absolutely. A private tour allows you to go at your own pace, avoid the crowds and enjoy a more personalized experience. If you don’t like traveling with people you don’t know, this is the perfect way to enjoy the beauty of Rainbow Mountain conveniently and flexibly.

The hike to Rainbow Mountain is moderately challenging mainly because of the altitude, not the distance. It’s around 4 miles (6.5 km) round trip, but you’re walking at over 5,000 meters (16,500 feet). If you’re not used to high altitudes, it is best to take it slow and stay hydrated. Our Rainbow Mountain private tour includes the option to ride a horse if needed.

Yes, horses are available for rent directly from locals at the start of the trail in the community. If you’re concerned about altitude or just want to save your energy, riding a horse is a good option.

We usually pick you up from your hotel in Cusco around 4:00 a.m to beat the crowds and enjoy the place with no so many people. But considering this is a private tour, we can adjust the departure time based on your preferences and pace.

It’s possible, especially if you haven’t acclimated properly in Cusco first. We always recommend spending at least 2 days in Cusco before doing the hike. Our guides carry oxygen and first aid kit just in case.

Layers are key. The mornings are chilly, but it warms up fast.

Bring:

  • A warm jacket
  • Gloves and hat
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • A raincoat (the weather changes quickly)
  • Hiking boots or sturdy footwear with good grip

It depends on the weather. When it is sunny, the colors are very vivid. If it is cloudy or raining, the colors may appear duller. Either way, the views are breathtaking and the scenery is unique in Peru.

You can find very basic restrooms at the check point and also along the route, depending. We recommend that you bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, just in case.

It depends on their age, fitness level and altitude tolerance. We have had families with children as young as 8 years old (with horse support).
