Useful Things to Know Before You Visit Cusco Perú
For all travellers exploring South America is a must do and Cusco is always on their travel bucket list there is 1 reason for this Machu Picchu but you must know there are many places in Cusco you should visit before planning visiting Machu Picchu.
Seeing Alpacas is totally normal as well as locals from different communities dressed in their traditional clothing as a part of their identity.
Keep in mind Cusco is situated at an elevation of 3,350 m (11,150 ft) for your first day in Cusco you should take it slow as your body gets used to the altitude, you can explore the Cusco´s main square and the local San Pedro market. We recommend taking a walkin tour around the city until you feel much better for any adventure activity.
Make sure you take a few days in Cusco before Machu Picchu to experience the Andean culture and charm of the city of Cusco including the Sacred Valley area. Check out some of must see attractions in Cusco:
The Qoricancha: The temple of the sun or the Qoricancha temple is maximum expression of ancient architecture and engineering. The temple of the Sun or Qoricancha, is also currently the Convent of Santo Domingo
Sacsayhuaman: The impressive fortress of Sacsayhuaman is strategically built on a hill from where you can appreciate all of Cusco. It is famous for its enormous carved stones, some of which are 9 meters or 30 feet high and weigh more than 350 tons.
Qenqo: Located four kilometers northeast of the city of Cusco, has the archaeological groups of Q’enqo Grande and Q´enqo Chico. Etymologically, it means labyrinth or zigzag, fulfilled a clearly religious function, being in the outer part an amphitheater in semicircular form with trapezoidal niches and a monolith that simulates to be a puma which measures approximately six meters
Puka pukara: Puka pukara means “red fortress”, because the calcareous stones with which it is built have acquired the reddish coloration of the land, very abundant in iron. It is alleged that it had the function of guarding Tambomach’ay, an important palace in the Incas. However, due to its architectural layout and the existence of fountains, aqueducts and multiple enclosures, it was a “tambo”, that is to say, a collective hostel that offered lodging and food to travellers, as well as to the retinue that had to accompany the Inca in his retreat in Tambomach’ay
Tambomachay: Tambomachay is located about 8 kms. north of Cusco and very close to the ruins of Puka Pukara, is an archaeological site that was intended for the cult of water and so that the head of the Inca Empire could rest. This place is also called Baños del Inca (Inca Baths). It consists of a series of aqueducts, canals and several waterfalls that run through the rocks. The surprising thing about this is that, from a main waterfall, the Incas created 2 secondary waterfalls, which are exactly the same. That is to say, if one places two empty bottles, one in each waterfall, the 2 are filled at the same time.
San Pedro Market: If you want to have the complete Cusco experience go to San Pedro Market! in this Market you will find where locals eat and buy goods, and also different kinds of traditional food, a good place to pick up souvenirs at a better Price.
Cusco´s Cathedral: This Catheadral is filled with incredible colonial art and artifacts such as the last supper with a roast guinea pig.
Pisac Sacred Valley: Don’t leave without first exploring the ruins of Pisac in the Sacred Valley of the Incas and its local market. We will make your experience unique and fun by interacting with the local people of the village.
If you’ve just arrived in Cusco, these tips could be quite useful
Learn Some Spanglish Before you Visit Cusco
Although Cusco is a tourist destination, it can be difficult to get the information you need completely in English; if you are lucky you might be able to find people who speak Spanglish and use hand gestures to hold basic conversations. Anyway, it is advisable to learn some basic Spanish phrases, so don’t forget to take a book of basic Spanish phrases with you
Adjust to the Altitude
Spend your first day in Cusco taking it easy. When we arrive at a new place we are all tempted to go out and explore. You will have plenty of time to do that, so at the beginning of your trip you will be better off if you take the time to relax, hydrate, remember that your body needs some time to adjust to the altitude in Cusco (11,200 feet). If you’re not feeling well, help yourself to the coca tea offered at your hotel – it really makes you feel better!
Try Some Regional Cuisine.
It is not necessary to eat guinea pig or alpaca to have a real gastronomic experience although many do; take advantage of the fact that you can eat like royalty in Peru since you can eat in one of the best restaurants by not spending a lot of money, one of the best restaurants we recommend is Chicha restaurant managed by the best chef in Peru (Gaston Acurio), and if you want to try Cuy we recommend that you do it on your trip to the Sacred Valley, you could take a day tou to Pisac which includes the tasting of this typical dish from Perú

But what do we know before the arrival of the Incas? Pisac was already inhabited by much older civilizations than the Incas, however, there is not much evidence of them, today the archaeologists summarize our history just talking about the Inca civilization, but we must know that in the archaeological site of Pisac we can find different monuments especially megalithic or gigantic constructions made by civilizations that no longer existed a long time ago. This place is definitely a must see during your Sacred Valley tour.
Archaeological site of Chinchero
The archaeological site of Chinchero is located at 3760 meters above sea level 35 kilometers from the city of Cusco, the beautiful chinchero part of its archaeological site is the exact combination between the constructions of the Inca era and the constructions during the time of the Spanish conquest, Chinchero has always been characterized for being a picturesque town with a lot of tradition and history, the people of Chinchero still wear the typical clothes of the Inca era and the language is still spoken by most of its population, chinchero also has its textile centers where you can interact uniquely with local families and learn from them.
Chinchero Textile Center
The textile center of Chinchero transmits the ancestral techniques of spinning clothing based on alpacas

Two of the most important tourist centers in the city of Cusco are Maras and Moray. In these places you can appreciate part of our ancient culture in its different stages such as pre-Inca, Inca, colonial and republican. Notes
Recommendations during the City Tour Cusco
The city of Cusco is located at 3,399 meters above sea level (above sea level). At this altitude it is recommended to drink mate de coca to combat altitude sickness.
The climate of Cusco is temperate. The days are generally sunny in the day. However, rains can occur at any time. It is advisable to wear a rain poncho.
The Sacred Valley is located a short distance from the city of Cuzco, where from the Incan era the agricultural and livestock areas and beautiful towns were concentrated. The valley is flanked on the right bank of the Urubamba River by the Urubamba Mountain Range.
The valley is characterized by very special conditions, scenic beauty, excellent climate, very fertile lands and the waters of the sacred river of the Incas, the Vilcanota (Quechua voice, sacred or wonderful thing), which upstream, in the town of Urubamba, changes its name and is called the Urubamba River. The Sacred Valley is between the towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, has wonderful Andean landscapes, where its inhabitants, natives of the Quechua ethnicity, preserve many customs and ancestral rites.
These places are part of a glorious past and are worth visiting for their historical and archaeological importance. If you want to learn more about Inca history and admire the architecture that was applied to create a powerful empire, write down these archeological sites of Cusco.
Tambomachay
Tambomachay is one of the most important archaeological sites in Cusco. This is due to its location, on the slope of a hill and next to the river of the same name. It is presumed that its function was the veneration of water, an important element in the Andean cosmovision. It has waterfalls and two aqueducts that transport and supply a flow throughout the year.
Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Site
If we keep talking about fascinating archaeological remains of Cusco, this amazing archaeological site can leave you with your mouth open for its constructions and the view of the city. The Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Park was built between the periods of the Incas Pachacutec and Huayna Capac and from there you could watch over the capital of the empire.
The park is only two kilometers from the center of Cusco and is made up of several constructions and ceremonial temples. The colossal carved rocks that make up the fortress of Sacsayhuaman represent the great engineering and architectural capacity developed by the Incas. In the fortress also takes place the ancestral celebration of Inti Raymi, or Feast of the Sun, every June 24.
Our Travelers interested in visiting Cusco City Tour and Sacred Valley were asked the following questions.
1) When is the best time to visit Cusco?
The dry season (April to October) is the best time to visit Maras and Moray. These months it is more probable to enjoy a sunny day, although the sun is strong; the landscapes look better; the only thing you should take into account is to bring water, use a sun blocker and a hat to protect us from UV rays.
2) Is the full day city tour dangerous?
The only problem during the tour can be caused by altitude sickness (headache, nausea, malaise). This tour is quite safe
3) How can I make my reservation for the full day city tour?
You can pay with up to 3 payment methods: Visa, MasterCard, or PayPal following these steps:
Complete the personal information of visitors.
Make the payment (at least 40% of the value of the tour).
Once in Cusco (at least 1 day before), complete the entire price of the tour.
4) Is this tour flexible?
We believe every traveller is different so make your trip your own “WE LIKE YOUR TRAVEL STYLE”
