Weather in Lima

If you are planning a trip to the capital of Peru, you are probably wondering: What is the weather like in Lima? This is a very important question to prepare your trip efficiently, to choose the best time to visit and to know what to wear. Lima has a very particular climate, different from many other cities in Peru.
Below, we explain everything about the weather in Lima, with data in degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit, seasonal comparisons and recommendations for travelers.

Weather in Lima: What is it Really Like?

The climate in Lima is characterized by an arid subtropical climate, also known as coastal desert, with low rainfall, high humidity and moderate temperatures throughout the year. It is influenced by the Humboldt Current also called the Peru Current, a cold Pacific current that moderates the heat in summer and accentuates the fog and humidity in winter.

  • Lima altitude: 154 meters above sea level (approximately 505 feet).
  • Average annual temperature: between 17 °C and 24 °C (63 °F to 75 °F).

Summer (December to March)

  • Average temperature: 22 °C to 29 °C (72 °F to 84 °F).
  • Characteristics: Clear skies, sunny days, higher heat. No rain, but there may be light drizzle.
  • Ideal for: Beach, coastal walks, outdoor activities.

Winter (June to September)

  • Average temperature: 14 °C to 18 °C (57 °F to 64 °F).
  • Characteristics: Constant fog (“garúa”), high humidity (up to 98%), gray days, little sunshine.
  • Wind chill: May seem cooler due to humidity, although temperatures do not drop much.

Autumn (April to June) and Spring (September to November)

  • Transitional climate: Temperatures are pleasant, the sky begins to open, but there is still humidity.
  • Temperature range: 17 °C to 23 °C (63 °F to 73 °F).
  • Good times to visit, with fewer tourists than in summer.

Fun Fact: Did you know that the weather in Cusco is very different from the weather in Lima?
Although both cities are in Peru, the weather in Cusco and Lima is completely different, and this is mainly due to the difference in altitude and geographical location.

  1. Lima is only 154 meters above sea level, on the Pacific coast, and has a coastal desert climate, with moderate temperatures and minimal rainfall.
  2. Cusco, on the other hand, is more than 3,400 meters above sea level, in the Peruvian Andes mountain range, which gives it a mountain climate, with cold temperatures at night, intense sunshine during the day and a marked rainy season (from November to March). While in Lima it’s summer in Cusco it can be raining and cold, which is why we recommend to pack differently for each city.

Best time to Visir Lima

The best time to visit Lima is from December to April, when the city experiences its summer and offers clear skies, constant sunshine and pleasant temperatures that hover between 25 and 30 °C (77 and 86 °F). During this period, it is most enjoyable to enjoy walks along the coast, stroll through neighborhoods such as Miraflores or Barranco, and enjoy Lima’s excellent cuisine with a view of the sea. Outside of this period, especially between May and November, Lima is usually covered by a coastal fog with gray skies and cooler, though still mild, temperatures. While these months are not ideal for sun-seekers, they can be attractive for those looking for fewer tourists and somewhat lower prices. So, if you are looking for good weather and a lively atmosphere, it is best to visit Lima between December and April.
